Position Overview:
The Buying Merchandiser will serve as a critical link between market trends, supplier relationships, and in-store commercial performance. This role is responsible for planning, sourcing, and optimizing the organization’s product assortment to maximize sales, margin, and customer satisfaction.The incumbent will work closely with the Store Manager and Visual Merchandiser to ensure the right products are available at the right time, in the right quantities — directly contributing to the brand’s revenue and retail objectives.This is a high-ownership, commercially focused role suited for a results-driven professional with strong analytical acumen, vendor management capability, and a genuine passion for fashion retail.
Qualifications:
- Any Graduate; specialization in Fashion Merchandising, Retail Management, or Business Administration preferred
- 2 – 5 years of hands-on experience in merchandise buying, retail planning, or inventory management within a fashion or apparel retail environment
- Demonstrated understanding of buying cycles, seasonal assortment planning, and vendor negotiations
- Proficiency in Microsoft Excel for MIS, buying reports, stock analysis, and performance dashboards
- Strong numerical literacy and comfort with data-driven decision making
Key Responsibilities:
- Plan and purchase merchandise aligned with customer demand, current market trends, and historical sales data to ensure optimal stock availability
- Identify and source new brands, product categories, and emerging fashion trends to strengthen and diversify the product assortment
- Build and maintain strong, professional relationships with suppliers, brand representatives, and vendors to support consistent procurement
- Negotiate pricing, gross margins, payment terms, and delivery schedules with vendors to achieve commercial targets
- Continuously analyze sales performance, sell-through rates, and inventory levels to make data-informed buying decisions and reduce stock risk
- Plan seasonal assortments and define product mix in alignment with brand identity, customer profile, and revenue goals
- Monitor fast-moving and slow-moving SKUs; take proactive action to reorder, markdown, or liquidate stock as required
- Coordinate with the Visual Merchandiser and Store Manager to ensure effective product placement, presentation, and floor replenishment
- Prepare and present buying reports, stock reports, and performance analyses to senior management on a regular basis
- Ensure timely replenishment of key products and critical size runs to prevent stockouts and maintain a complete customer offering
Skills Required:
- Demonstrated experience in merchandise buying and assortment planning within a branded or multi-brand fashion retail setup.
- Strong analytical and commercial mindset with the ability to interpret sales data and translate insights into actionable buying decisions.
- Effective vendor negotiation skills with a track record of achieving competitive pricing and reliable delivery performance.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Excel for inventory tracking, buying reports, and stock performance analysis.
- Excellent communication and cross-functional coordination skills, particularly with store operations and visual merchandising teams.
- Ability to manage multiple buying cycles simultaneously while maintaining accuracy and meeting deadlines.
